7 Interesting Facts About Project IGI Mission 2 SAM Base

Introduction

SAM Base is the second mission in Project IGI. In this mission, your objective is to obtain blocks of C-4 from the ammunition storage bunker, plant them on the SAM batteries, and detonate the missiles remotely. There’s not much by way of infrastructure in this level, but the designers and developers have managed to pack some interest and interesting details into it nonetheless.

Let’s get into the facts and findings from Project IGI 1 Mission 2 SAM Base.

Secrets from IGI 1 Mission 2

1) The Notice is Written in a Pseudo-Language

The wooden barracks that houses the all-important C-4 charges as well as hand grenades, flashbangs, and proximity mines has a notice affixed to its outer wall. It reads: EKSPLOSIVA! Chesto sobstvenya budet lakite na litotsk mani persiva. Even inside the bunker, the dark green crates have the words ‘dangri statsk 8801’ printed or painted at intervals. At first glance, the writing appears to be in transliterated Russian or a Slavic language, but upon closer inspection, it doesn’t line up with the vocabulary, grammar, or syntax of Russian—or any known language for that matter. This Russian-passing gibberish is actually a pseudo-language. These fake or made-up languages use letter combinations, phonetics, or linguistic features that mimic the appearance or sound of a real language without conveying coherent meaning in that language. As for the meaning of the notice, we can rationally conclude that it’s a warning about the dangerous nature of the bunker’s explosive contents.

2) Varta is the Name of the Truck Brand

No, it’s not bapta like you would say baptist. In Russian, ‘B’ says ‘V’ and ‘P’ says ‘R’. In Ukrainian and Belarusian, varta means guard. In a game where the guards are your enemies, it’s nice to have a ‘guard’, non-sentient though it may be, as a non-hostile, resourceful friend that helps you in not one but two levels. You can’t see the back of the truck in the preceding mission because there’s no alternate entrance into the garage and approaching the truck from the front wraps up the mission. In Level 2 SAM Base, you can get a good look at the back. The embossed branding is prominent. It has two orange-white-red reflectors on the mud flap and a second number plate.

3) The Tiny Truck is a MUTT

MUTT is shorthand for Military Utility Tactical Truck. The missile defence base has a MUTT, a modified M151, near the second machine gun post. Its plate number is 89GP720 WHLBAA04 401-10. This small, compact vehicle is the same kind Captain Harrison and his men use to intercept Jach Priboi in Mission 6 Get Priboi.

4) 6 M16A2 Grenades are Present in the Level

The M16A2 is a low-stealth but powerful fully automatic assault rife with the attachment of an M203 grenade launcher. This gun makes its first appearance in SAM Base; you will find it (with three grenades) on one of the beds in the barracks opposite the ammunition bunker. The three grenades are ideal for blowing up the guards in the three watchtowers. Surprisingly, you find three additional grenades lying on the ground beside a wooden crate opposite the MUTT. You will need to finish off the guard behind the crate along with a few others to pick up these grenades. Why they are where they are is anyone’s guess. After all, none of the guards (in the entire game) wield an M16A2.

5) Medipack Syringe in an Odd Place

In IGI, some things are found without much effort in the most obvious places, but sometimes you chance upon rare or life-saving items in unexpected places. One of the bunkers is a computer room. If you go to the last desk and look down, you will find a Medipack Syringe on the floor, the only one in this level. Normally, you would expect to find a health kit on a desk or inside a drawer, but since the player cannot interact with the drawers and the desk would have been too easy, the syringe was hidden on the floor. Perhaps one of the guards forgot to put it where it belonged. Well, his loss, Jones’ gain.

6) Letters and a Drawing on the Corkboards

Many YouTubers focus on the adult poster in Level 6, but miss what I just found. I didn’t think a game like Project IGI was meant to make anyone feel anything at an emotional level. It’s all about Jones infiltrating bases, gunning down guards, and obtaining intel, isn’t it? We scratch the surface of Jones’, Anya’s, Jach’s, Josef’s, and Ekk’s life, but we don’t discover anything that makes us warm up to them. Level 2 SAM Base creates a smidge of empathy for the unlikeliest characters in the game: the guards. How? There are two bunkers in the game with corkboards. Stop and stare, and you’ll notice that these boards have letters on them. What sticks out is an innocent stick-figure drawing that appears to have been made by a child. Advancing in the game requires Jones to kill these enemy soldiers, but the player might feel a smidge of guilt upon realising that the ‘bad guys’ are actually good guys to the parents, wives, girlfriends, or children writing them these letters. Because Jones and the IGI have a certain agenda, they are forced to see the guards in a certain light.

7) 17:57 is the Time According to the Landline

Cordless landline phones are present on some desks. Zooming in on the display with your binoculars shows you that the time is 17:57 (5:57 p.m.) and the day is Thursday. The numbers on the bottom left and bottom right don’t seem to mean anything. The low visibility suggests it’s dusk, but we cannot infer the time of day of the level based on the phone display because the phones, like other elements across the levels, are static.
